What is Eddy McPixel?

Eddy McPixel is a browser-based pixel art editor : a tool for creating low-resolution, deliberately blocky artwork pixel by pixel. It is built for everyone from first-time hobbyists drawing their first sprite to indie game developers producing full tilesets and character art. Because it runs entirely in your web browser, there is nothing to download, nothing to install, and no account to create. You arrive on the page and the canvas is ready.

It is inspired by beloved desktop tools like Aseprite, but rebuilt from the ground up for the web with a clean, modern interface, sensible defaults, and keyboard shortcuts that keep experienced artists moving fast while staying approachable for newcomers.

Who is it for?

  • Indie game developers making sprites, tiles, and UI art for retro-style or 2D games.
  • Hobbyists and beginners who want to try pixel art without buying software or fighting a steep learning curve.
  • Experienced pixel artists who want a fast, keyboard-driven workflow with layers, palettes and selections.
  • Students and educators teaching digital art, game design, or colour theory.
  • Web and app designers creating favicons, app icons, emojis and small- format graphics.
Free to use. Eddy McPixel is free, with no watermarks and no usage limits. If you find it useful, you can optionally support the project from inside the editor's About panel.

Private by design

Your artwork never leaves your device unless you choose to export it. Everything you draw is rendered and edited locally in your browser. Projects are saved straight to your computer as a portable .eddy file, and your work is continuously auto-saved to your browser so you can pick up exactly where you left off.

Our mission

Great creative tools should be instantly accessible to everyone, on any device, without paywalls or gatekeeping. Eddy McPixel aims to make pixel art approachable, fast, and genuinely enjoyable: whether you are spending five minutes doodling or finishing a full game's worth of art.

How it's built

Eddy McPixel is a lightweight, dependency-lean web app. The drawing engine uses the HTML5 Canvas with a custom compositing pipeline: each layer is stored as a grid of pixels, visible layers are alpha-blended into a single buffer, and the result is scaled up with crisp, pixel-perfect rendering so every block stays sharp. It is written in TypeScript with React and styled with Tailwind CSS, and the full source is organised to be readable and maintainable.
